TALKS equips healthcare professionals with the tools and confidence to help families navigate conversations about illness and injury with children and youth.
“To explain this illness to our children, we first need to understand it ourselves.”
–Person living with ALS
What is TALKS:
Informed by global research with providers and families, the program addresses common barriers like lack of preparation, limited resources, and the need for honest, developmentally appropriate communication. By centering the experiences of youth caregivers and diverse families, TALKS provides practical, culturally responsive guidance to support meaningful conversations throughout the disease journey.
Why do we need TALKS:
Providers and families told us there is a universal need for:
- Honest and open communication between providers and families
- Multidisciplinary and ongoing support for families and children
- Preparedness of health care practitioners and families to have discussions
- Ability to talk to youth and children at their own level and maturity
How is TALKS presented:
Funded by:

“Please give us and our children hope and information about ALS — explain what we’re likely to experience, and help us stay positive. We really need that.” ––Spouse to a person living with ALS
